Movie Blog # 7 - Confessions of A Shopaholic
Year Released: February 13, 2009
Tagline: All She Ever Wanted was a Little Credit
Main Actors:
- Isla Fisher as Rebecca Bloomwood
- Hugh Dancy as Luke Brandon
Plot (Source: Wikipedia):
The film starts off with a flashback of when Rebecca was young, her mom buys her brown shoes that will last forever but aren't very fashionable, while the other little girls in the store are getting cute fashionable shoes. When they look at her mundane shoes, they laugh at her and its at that moment that Rebecca first feels unworthy.
The movie flashes forward to the present, Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher), living with her best friend Suze Cleath (Krysten Ritter), has moved to Manhattan to nurture her shopping addiction and to get involved in the New York City magazine world. She's a journalist for a garden magazine but she'd rather work for the fashion magazine "Alette". Unfortunately for Rebecca, when she gets to her interview she's told by the male receptionist that the job has been filled. He helps her out by giving her a tip that she should get her foot in the door with another magazine owned by the corporation and then make her way up to "Alette" since the company, Dantay West that owns all the magazines, likes to promote from within, he tells her there are interviews being held at the magazine "Successful Saving."
Rebecca is off to the interview but on the way there she realizes that there is a sale at Denny & George. Inside she finds a beautiful green scarf. Unfortunately her credit card is declined and the sales girl tells her that they can't hold sale items. Rebecca races to the nearest hot dog stand and offers to buy all the hot dogs if he gives her back change in cash. Rebecca lies and says its for her Aunt Ermintrude who is sick in the hospital and she needs the scarf. Finally a man offers her money so she can buy the scarf. When she interviews with Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy), the editor of the magazine Successful Saving, she finds that he is the man from whom she had borrowed money. While he's still talking on the phone, she throws off her scarf on one of the cubicles and tries to act like it's not hers. The interview doesn't go well for Rebecca, when he asks her what Finnish she speaks and about the current fiscal crisis. She tries to distract him but it all goes badly. Luke's assistant Hayley comes into the room and tells Rebecca that she dropped her scarf. Rebecca knows her game is up and leaves the interview.
Frustrated by her lack of success, she and Suze write drunken letters to Alette magazine and Successful Saving, but she posts each one to the wrong magazine. Nevertheless, Luke Brandon hires her. Then, rather than completing a work assignment, she goes to a clothing sale. When examining an expensive cashmere coat, she realizes that it is 5% cashmere and 95% acrylic. She writes her column, calling herself "the Girl in the Green Scarf". Impressed, her boss, Luke, invites her to a conference in Miami and an important ball. While shopping for the ball, Luke asks what she thinks of him. Rebecca says he is a workaholic and not a good investment as all his hard work goes into the magazine but the earnings to someone else. At a restaurant, another woman, Alicia Billington (Leslie Bibb), asks Luke to the ball. Rebecca learns that Luke is the son of the famous socialite Elinor Sherman and that he knows a lot about clothes. At the ball the two share a romantic moment on the roof.
Rebecca returns home to confrontations with a bill collector and her best friend Suze, who makes her join a Shopaholic-group. Her Shopaholic class leader, Miss Korch (Wendie Malick), forces her to sell all the clothes she just bought, including her bridesmaid dress. She is later publicly accused of not paying her debts live on a TV show, 'Morning Coffee' and as a consequence loses her job. Though Luke is hurt that Rebecca has lied to him, he still finds her a source of inspiration. Suze finds out that Rebecca sold her maid of honor dress, and forces her to move out.
Rebecca decides to sell all of her clothes in a sale, but hesitates over the green scarf. A blond woman and a woman talking on a telephone begin a bidding war over the scarf. The sale is a success, making it possible for her to repay her debt. Rebecca attends Suze's wedding, and she forgives her, letting her be the maid of honor. Rebecca and Luke come together, with Luke returning her the green scarf;– he was the person behind both bidders. During the credits, Rebecca ends up working for Luke's new magazine, writing articles such as "Confessions of a Shopaholic".

Favorite Scenes:
There are so many cute scenes in this movie and here are some of them.
Rebecca was introduced by her boss to his guest coz he thought Rebecca can speak Finnish and she started to blabber. To get off the hook, she just slapped the man and said that men like him are the reason why girls cry (sorta cant remember)

When she paid her debt with Jar of Coins hahaha

Early Bday Gift
I had a blackberry curve 8310 before and I love it. I only used it less than a month coz it was stolen. The 8900 looks gorgeous, sleek and chic. Of all the phone I've had, my top 2 are (1)Iphone and (2)Blackberry
Besides, i think they sit handsomely together, dont you agree?

On the other hand, Marian sees Manuel as no more than her best friend. Marian's greatest love has alwaysbeen Lance (Sam), a classmate who protected her from bullies back in grade school. Ever since Lance and his family migrated abroad ten years ago, Marian never had the chance to establish contact with him again. The only thing that Marian knows is that Lance has become the lead singer of the new rock band, Orion.
Good fortune smiles on Marian when Orion decides to tour the Philippines. Marian is intent on seeing Lance again, and she brings Manuel with her on a chase that brings them around the Philippines and abroad. Manuel believes that the whole chase is futile because a popular star like Lance will not remember a simple girl like Marian, but Marian does not believe him.
When Lance and Marian finally meet again, sparks fly between them. Manuel now has to decide - Will he let his best friend be happy with her Prince Charming, or will he fight for the love that has kept him alive for the last 16 years?

Types of Shoppers
My Teachers Comment - Excellent description, examples, and organization. Work on subject-verb agreeement
Shopping is part of our daily life. It is defined as examining an item with the intention of purchasing it. Like different items on the market, there are also different types of shoppers. Some shoppers buy items for a short use and return it later, some would say they will never buy anything but ends s-v agreementup with number of shopping bags in their hands, or those who like to take advantage with price cuts and sale events. For me, the three types of shopper based on their behavior towards shopping are “buy now, return later” shoppers, “never say never” shoppers, and the “raging bull” shoppers.
First, there are the “buy now, return later” shoppers who literally buy items for a short use and return them later on. This type of shopper is usually a person who will attend a one day special event. For example, I have a friend who bought a nice dress at Bloomingdales for a big party that day. It is so funny because we can still see the tag price of the dress dangling on the side. The next day, she returned the item at the store. I know this is not a good practice but I cannot blame her for wanting her money back for a dress that cost hundreds of dollars and just worn in a couple of hours. I suggested that next time, maybe she can resort to a rental place for gowns and dresses. A “buy now, return later” shopper can also be a person who just to test and compare items. My cousin who is into technology usually buys several gadgets such as a laptop or a cell phone, to test its quality, efficiency, and features. It allows him to compare that particular gadget to other brands and competitors. After testing, he retains what he likes the best and he returns the other items at the store.
The second type of shoppers are the “never say never” shoppers. These people are the kind of shoppers who say they will never spend a single cent but end up with several shopping bags in their hands. One time, me and two of my cousin went to San Francisco to have fun. We rode the cruise and our photograph was taken. After the cruise, they will develop the film and it will be available at the photo booth for purchasing. While we were on the boat, one of my cousins said, “I don’t want to spend money so I will never buy that picture.” When we went down off the boat, we approached the photo booth and the photographer held our photo at a distance. My cousin who said that she will never purchase the photo suddenly snagged the picture, looked at it for a moment and suddenly uttered, “How much?” My other cousin and I laughed loud because she had conviction when she said she won’t purchase the picture, but then she was the first to buy a copy. This still brings laughter to us whenever we recall that moment. Sometimes, I also become a “never say never” shopper. Before going to the mall, I would tell everybody that I will never buy an item because I want to save money. At the end of the day, before I knew it, I already have ten shopping bags on my hands.
Lastly, the “raging bull” shoppers are people who love sale events. In shopping, the color red refers to sale events, hence the name “red-tag” sale events. Like a raging bull aiming to its red flag target, the “raging bull” shoppers are constantly on the lookout for the latest sales. They fall in line for hours or even days to get the advantage of the huge price cut ranging from 50% to 75% mark down. I have heard of this story where a new Dollar Store will open in Gilroy and they have announced that the first 10 people would be able to purchase a 1 gigabyte I-pod shuffle for just $1 which originally cost $99 at that time. In my opinion, Thanksgiving Day sale event is the biggest sale event of the year. I have experienced falling in line as early as 4am in the morning just to purchase an item on a sale price. This is also the only time of the year that I have observed when the parking lots all over the area are jam packed. It also felt like there were hundreds of bulls that raced inside the mall or store because of the rummage all over the floor.
Like what the saying says, “A problem can be solved in many and different ways,” shopping can be done in many different style, strategy or behavior. As long as the person is able to satisfy his or her wants and needs through shopping, it does not matter whether he or she is a “buy now, return later” shopper, “never say never” shopper, or a “raging bull” shopper.

Kinds of Shopper
The essay entitled “Kinds of Shoppers” is about the kinds of shoppers based on the perspective of the author. According to the author, the three kinds of shoppers are bargain hunters, pleasure seekers and social shoppers.
Bargain shoppers are people who shop at a sale price to save money. Pleasure seekers are shoppers who make shopping as a therapy, celebration and comfort. Last but not the least, are the social shoppers who treat shopping as a social activity with peers, friends or family and purchasing is optional.
Based on the essay, I could classify myself as a multi-class shopper. I am not only a bargain hunter, pleasure seeker and a social shopper, but I am also a window shopper and an impulsive shopper.
Saving money is necessary especially these days. When I go out and shop, my principle is that the price should be reasonable and quality should never be compromised. For example, I like clothes from American Eagle, Hollister Anchor Blue, or H&M, to name a few. I buy clothes from their clothing line collection because of the quality of the materials they use. However, I do not pay for the full price when I shop with these stores. The value of clothes easily depreciates in a matter of one month. When I go to these stores and I really like an item, I would wait for one month and surprisingly, it is already marked down up to 50% off.
(Here is a T-Shirt I bought from Anchor Blue. I only paid $5 for it and the original price was $20. I was able to save $15.)
I have never known a person who doesn’t like shopping. I love shopping and buying new stuffs either for myself, friends or family. I agree with the author that for pleasure seekers, shopping acts as a therapy and comfort to that person. Believe it or not, there was a time in my life that my week is not complete without buying an item. I would feel sad and down if I was not able to buy something new for myself. I need to buy anything at least one item that ranges from clothes, games, food, school supplies, or just random items. Although I am glad that I already have removed this habit since this type of habit is too expensive. (LOL laugh out loud) Seriously, I just decided to use my money wisely. With the exception of buying new things weekly, the effect of shopping as a pleasure is still true for me until now.
When I shop for myself, I like to go out alone because of the time I take when buying items. I become a social shopper when my friends and family ask me to go with them and help them decide what to buy. I appreciate that they value my opinion, but of course, ultimately it is their decision. Shopping with a group of people I know becomes our social activity and bonding. This is the time where we get to purchase and one way to update each other about our lives.
As a window shopper, I like going to the malls and looking at some items that I might buy in the future. It also helps me to compare items between stores and learn what is new in the market. For example, I would go to Game Stop and see if there were newly released games that I like. I would also go to clothing stores and see if the clothes I like are already on sale. I am a "techie" person so I also like doing window shopping for gadgets that are currently in the market such as laptops, gaming consoles, software, or cell phones.
When I window shop, sometimes I become an impulsive shopper. I buy things on impulse especially if I really like that particular item. When I go to GameStop and I see that there was a newly released Final Fantasy Game from any platform, I would buy it immediately. When I go out to the mall and browse the clearance rack, I would buy clothes I like even if I did not plan to buy clothes that day. I also buy new gadgets at an impulse if I really like to have that new technology such as a cell phone or a laptop.
(One of my Final Fantasy Collection: Final Fantasy Tactics from Square Enix. Platform is PSP)
Shopping will always be one of my favorite activities as it is with most people. I have learned to become a better and wiser shopper from time to time. I will continue to shop as long as it makes me happy and spending would not hurt my finances or savings. Lastly, I would like to share this quote to everybody, “A person who buys something he or she does not need steals from himself or herself.”

Lia decided to search for the voice to prove that true love is real and it still exists. Unbeknownst to her, the one she is looking for is just living next door – her annoying neighbor, Eric. But just as when they were already getting along, Eric discovers that Lia has his tape. The pain suddenly starts coming back. He tries to convince her that the voice doesn’t exist but ends up falling in love with her.
Will Lia ever believe in true love again?
Three stories of love, fate and courage come in one film to tell a story of how love touches us in countless ways.
Rating: 4/5Personal Review: I thought it is going to be one of those corny movie but surprisingly I fell inlove with All About Love. Kikiligin ka sa mga eksena which means that it is effective. I like how the TAPE transitioned from one story to another. My favorite story (trilogy) is the last one with Lia and Eric played by Bea and John Llyod.
Favorite Scene: When Bea entered John Llyods unit and he was singing "Langit Ko" which also happens to be my favorite soundtrack of the movie.
Favorite Quote:
dont you dare talk to me about pain Lia!
it doesnt work that way
pero pinipili ng taong magmamahal, pinipili mong paulit ulit
dahil kung hindi parang pinili mo na ring wag mabuhay
Favorite SOund Track: Langit Ko sung by John Llyod Cruz.

Movie Blog # 4: Babae sa Breakwater
Year Released: 2004
Plot from Netflix:
In this bittersweet survival tale, director Mario O'Hara paints a realistic portrait of the cadgers, prostitutes and scavengers who dwell along Manila Bay's breakwater scratching out a living. Fleeing from gangsters, brothers Basilio (Kristoffer King) and Buboy (Al Cris Galura) settle along the jetty, but trouble crops up when Basilio gets involved with a diseased hooker (Katherine Luna) whose existence is stoked by liquor and drugs.
Image
Rating: 4/5
Personal Review:
I thought I wouldnt like the movie but I did. This movie garnered several awards separating it with other TL movies. It portrayed the situation of many Filipinos and how they cope up with poverty. It is touching that Basilio loved Paquita unconditionally despite Paquita being a prostitue. In return, she quit her jon and became a good wife and mother.
Favorite Scene:
The end scene. Basilio asked Paquita to teach him to read and write. One day, Basilio wrote a letter to his brother. Put it in a bottle and sealed it. He threw it out in the ocean hoping that the message would reach his brother living in another province. When Basilio died, Paquita went back to thier hometown. She went to the beach and saw this bottle with a letter inside. She opened it and she found out that it was Basilio's letter to her brother saying how happy he is as a married man. Paquita was brought into tears reading the letter.

You are FUCKING FIRED!!!!
"You are Fucking Fired!!!!!" is the sweetest thing I've heard today.
At last, IM FREE! Since January 2009, I've been wanting to resign from the case assigned to me.
A month and half ago, I already told my sentiments to my supervisor. I asked If I could get another case but unfortunately there is non available. I just told her that I will try to hold on and stretch my patience but if I've come to my boiling point then THATS IT.
Last night until today at 6am, I was unable to sleep (and its now 2pm) thinking if i will continue my resignation or not. I already have my resignation letter but im still reluctant.
After all the errands, 12nn, I've called the office and hope for the best. I've spoke with the new guy. I told him I wont be able to work anymore because I am resigning immediately due to personal reasons. (I have valid reasonSSS, believe it or not) I'm not expecting sugar and sweets. I was trying to be courteous but when I felt that he is raising his voice and becoming belligerent, I answered back.
He said, of all the weekends I can choose, why did I decide to resign on a Fourth of July and I already have said that I will be working this weekend.
I know it is unprofessional to resign without giving the company two weeks notice. He is right that I already said I will work this coming weekend. But since he is a JERK, i said i have my prioritize (which is true and Im not lying, worth my resignation) and I cannot commit anymore that is why I am resigning. I even said, "I've read the employee handbook and it says we can give 24 hour notice if we cannot make it to our shift." It may not be 2 weeks notice but at least it is more than 24 hours. ahahaha.
Then he keeps on pushing, "what do you think the client would feel. I hope you feel good about yourself." So I said, "well i am not the agency. i am not the only worker you have, am i? and no i dont feel good about what i did so i am sorry for it."
Geez, I've met so many Maxims worker outside the field and some of them have less hours, like only 8 hours a week. Some only have 2 days work and they want more. Please, give my slot to those people who really needs it.
It's not Im not grateful because I am. Its just that, I dont feel comfortable anymore with my work and I dont feel I am growing anymore with that kind of environment. When I feel those then how can I be effective. Id rather leave and give my slot to someone who is more deserving. I'm certain that with many people out of job, they would easily fill my position in a matter of hours.
I'm glad it is him I've spoke with, because if it is my supervisor, I would have said, "yes i will work for you this week". I would need to endure another 2 days 14 hour shifts. I'm already at the tip of my patience and I can't take anymore. It maybe two days notice but it was six months of stretching my patience.
Hmmm, that is why my sixth sense is ON again these past few days. So this is what will happen.
"You are FUCKING FIRED!!" rings to my ears like "YOU are finally FREE!!"
Hostility me wont get you anywhere. That is not the right way you get something out of me.
Believe it or not, at the end, I just said 'Yes I Feel Good about what I did'. Despite what he said to me over the phone, raised his voice and cursed me. I've never felt anything. I wasnt intimidated at all or what he is trying to make me feel. My job made me numbed. I am already stoic.
I know 2 or 3 people will really get mad to me for doing this. But hell I care. There is more to life than this. I have a brighter and better future and more opportunities. That new guy doesnt know anything. It didnt matter what he thinks of me coz I know deep inside what I gave, what I've sacrificed, what I've endured. There are more people who appreciates me and my work, those people who know me well.
To my supervisor J and Ca who have always been nice and understanding (not that new guy) and to the company, Thank you for everything and for the opportunity! I know you know how hard I worked.
Temporarily, i may have less income for a month ahahaha but it doesnt matter who much you make, it is how much you save.
Everything that happened has already been written....I'll know the consequences in the future. But whatever it is, I know it will be better.
